The
Ohio State University Press Guide to Manuscript Preparation
We
try to edit as many manuscripts as possible on disk and will want to use the
manuscript disk you prepared on your computer. Please follow these guidelines
carefully to make the editing process as quick and as efficient as possible.
When in doubt, remember to keep formatting simple and consistent.
What
we need from you for your final version:
1. A double-spaced and
paginated (in any style) manuscript. Notes may appear as foot- or endnotes. The
manuscript may be printed on front and back sides of the page. Any font may be
used.
2. Electronic disks that
match the manuscript exactly. In those rare cases when we don’t have the
manuscript on disk, send 2 paper copies. [Note: the manuscript and
corresponding disk must contain the complete manuscript, excluding the index,
which is produced later.]
3. Although we prefer
manuscript files in Word or WordPerfect, we can accept other electronic
formats. Please indicate in your cover letter which program was used to
generate the files.
4. Tables and Illustrations:
- Tables should be set in Word or Excel, using tabs or cells to
separate the columns. Decimals, if used, should be aligned.
- Line art/photos. Five-by-seven inch or larger glossy photos are
best, either in black and white or color. Illustrations appearing in a book
can be shot as photos. If scanned, the resolution must be high enough for
printing purposes. Optimally, photos should be scanned at 300 dpi (dots per
inch) or higher; line art, 1200 dpi. Production should also be instructed on
whether figures may be cropped for placement.
- Charts should be submitted in their native format (i.e., the
format in which they were created). The normal format for charts is either
Word or Excel. If authors are submitting charts in another format, they
should consult first with the production department to see whether these
formats are acceptable.
- It is important that all illustrations, tables, and charts be
clearly labeled and numbered according to their appearance in the book. This
will prevent mix-ups in the placement of figures in the page proofs.
- A list of illustrations is to accompany the manuscript.
There should also be a call-out in the final manuscript for the placement of
each illustration, e.g., <Figure 1 here>
